A dental crown is used when one of your teeth has become severely damaged or fractured due to trauma or decay. A dental bridge is made up of 2 or more dental crowns that are connected to each other when one or more teeth are missing and require replacement.
The crown that is fitted by your dentist can be made from a variety of different materials. Some materials are specifically designed to blend in with your natural teeth such as E-max, zirconia and porcelain and other materials are more durable such as gold, however they are more visible when you yawn, laugh or smile widely. Gold is a stronger material and won’t chip but it may reduce the cosmetic result.
Crowns can also be placed on your front teeth and the majority of patients will request for the dental crown to match the shape and colour of their own natural teeth to maintain a natural looking smile. If a patient wishes to have a whiter smile then a whitening treatment can be used to brighten their natural teeth and then match the new crowns and bridges to the new shade. Crowns and bridges can not be whitened once permanently fitted.
Both crowns and bridges can be metal, ceramic, porcelain, zirconia, composite resin, or a combination of materials. For example, you can have a porcelain crown fused to metal which is tooth coloured on the outside with the added strength of both materials.
Crowns and bridges will restore the function of a tooth that has either lost it’s structure or is missing. They are an excellent solution for teeth that have either been lost or are weakened and may potentially fracture.
What is a dental crown?
A crown is essentially a cap that covers a damaged tooth. Similarly a crown can be fitted over a tooth that has undergone a root canal treatment to restore the strength and function of the tooth. It can also be used in combination with implant treatments to replace missing teeth. The crown is attached to the dental implant.
To place a crown, a dentist will need to identify the damage and if the tooth is able to be saved. A crown can be placed over teeth with hairline fractures but if the damage is too deep then the only sensible treatment may be to remove the tooth entirely. After inspection the tooth will be trimmed to prepare a base for the new permanent crown. An impression will be taken of the prepared tooth for the crown to be made by the dental lab and a temporary crown will be placed to protect the tooth. Once your bespoke crown has been made then it will be fitted using a special tooth adhesive or cement.
What is a dental bridge?
A bridge is a form of dental prosthesis made up of one or more artificial teeth (depending on the number of missing teeth) that are bonded between two crowns. Bridges are placed if there is not enough bone to place an implant or the gap is too small for a dental implant. It is also ideal when a gap is in between two damaged teeth in need of crowns.
Most of the time, the dentist would rather use implants to replace missing teeth rather than prepping the teeth either side of the gap and removing healthy tooth structure.
So, for bridges, it would mean that the two teeth neighbouring the gap will have the same treatment for placing a crown. Then, the artificial tooth/teeth in between the anchoring crowns will sit lightly on the gums when the entire setup is completed.
A bridge can also be attached to two dental implants. The implants would serve as the anchoring teeth.

Damaged and deformed or gaps in your teeth can decrease your self-esteem. You need effective solutions that will bring your lovely smile back.
Crowns and bridges are excellent solutions if you have damaged or lost teeth. These treatments will strengthen your natural teeth and replace what you have lost.
Crowns and Bridges
We advocate prevention to avoid oral health problems, but if you are experiencing pain or discomfort right now, we can remove that problem for you as early as possible. Don’t wait until your next check-up!
Your dentist will examine your teeth, find out if you need crowns and bridges, and assess whether you are eligible for the treatment.
If you have relatively healthy gums, you most probably are good to proceed to the treatment.
If you have underlying problems that weaken the gum tissue surrounding the area the dentist will place your crown or bridge, you might have to undergo gum treatments before getting crowns and bridges.
Also, the dentist might defer you to other solutions when crowns and bridges turn out to be less than ideal. For example, you might get dental implants instead.
Also, if you choose so, you can opt for dentures instead of crowns and bridges. However, they feel a little less like natural teeth.
The dentist will use high-tech scans, a mould of the subjected teeth, and an impression of your mouth so that they could use them as bases for recreating a synthetic version of the replacement.
For a practice like Holford Partners Curaden, the laboratories where they make your teeth replacements are highly accurate and first class.
Your crown or bridge can be made of metal, ceramic, porcelain, zirconia, composite resin, or a combination of materials. It all depends on the purpose of the tooth to be replaced.
If you need a crown for a molar that does heavy chewing work and is located at an almost invisible area of the mouth, you can opt for a stronger material like gold rather than more aesthetic porcelain.
Your dentist will give you the best choice.
You can have a scheduled subdivided procedure that is done in a few separate days. This is the most common way of getting crowns or bridges.
For the first session, the dentist will examine and prepare the tooth needing the crown. This step often involves taking scans of your tooth and making a mold of or mouth to help create your crown or bridge.
The dentist will then file down and remove part of the tooth’s outer layer and then make an impression of your trimmed tooth and the teeth surrounding it.
The dentist will then put a temporary crown over the tooth for protection. At this point, you may go home and wait for the next schedule.
Then, the dentist will send the impression to the laboratory where they will make your crown or bridge. You might have to wait for a few days or a couple of weeks, depending on the material, size, and quantity of your crown or bridge.
When finished, you’ll return for the second visit and your dentist will cement the tooth replacement.
If you have lost a tooth or after an extraction, you have the option of getting a dental implant. It is a painless surgery you can have with us.
A dental implant is a metal post attached to your jaw bone that serves as the root’s replacement.
The surgery will last 1-2 hours and you will have to wait for at least three months of complete healing before the final restoration of your smile. You first will be given a temporary crown.
Three to six months later, your lab-made crown is done, and the final steps are achieved.
Come to Holford Partners Curaden for dental implants. We guarantee quality work that lasts a lifetime.

It can sometimes be possible for your dentist to do a combination of things when possible. We can either offer multiple appointments so you don’t need to spend so long in the dental chair but if you are keen to reduce the number of visits, it may be possible to offer a combination of treatments on the same day.
One example would be, if you were having a root canal treatment done the then first stage of the dental crown could also be done on the same day. Similarly, if you have two damaged teeth either side of a missing tooth, then your dentist can easily address all 3 issues at the same time but preparing the damaged teeth and replacing the gap with a 3 unit bridge. This would be a simple bridge procedure.
If you have a damaged tooth which has been diagnosed as needing to be extracted then it may be possible, depending on the level of bone, to surgically extract the tooth and replace it with an immediate implant. This not only saves you coming in for another visit but also cuts down the usual waiting time for the bone to heal post extraction and then have the implant placement 3 months later.
You would still need to wait 3 months after the immediate implant to be able to place the permanent crown or bridge as the bone will need to heal and fully fuse with the dental implant.
The cost of crowns and bridges widely vary depending on the material and the quantity.
There are many alternatives to crowns and bridges but when you compromise on quality then the crowns and bridges will not last as long. As a result you will end up spending more in the long term for replacements which could have been avoided if you had chosen the slightly more expensive/longer lasting treatment. It all comes down to quality of life and you don’t want to have unnecessary replacements sooner than you should. You also want a crown or bridge that will look natural and blend in with your other teeth. Cheaper alternatives can often be obvious and look foreign in your mouth which can knock your confidence when you smile.
The best thing you can do to avoid additional costs for dental replacements is preventive care. Regular checkups, professional hygiene cleans, excellent oral care habits, proper diet and nutrition will get you a long way.
If you are wondering if we are too expensive for you, do not worry. You don’t have to be a celebrity or remortgage your house to avail of our services.
Once we have fully assessed your mouth, gums and soft tissues then we will give you all the options available, ranging from the cheapest to the most expensive. Our friendly reception team will be advised what will need to be arranged and schedule the treatments that are within your budget.

We will advise and recommend what the best options are for you and your oral health and allow you to take your time to decide. Too often do some dentists advise unnecessary treatments that are not in the best interests of the patient. Our patient’s quality of life is out number one priority.
Our treatments’ results are effective and long-lasting, which means that you won’t have to worry about problems, pain, and discomfort for a significant amount of time.
We do not offer online consultations because dental check-ups require a dentist to take a close look at your teeth and gums. Sometimes issues can be happening below the surface which may only be visible once an x-ray is taken.
As crowns and bridges are custom made to fit your teeth, your dentist will need to see you for two visits.
Your first appointment will be to prepare the damaged tooth if it is a crown or the two teeth either side of the gap where the missing tooth or teeth are. The dentist will place a temporary crown or bridge over the trimmed teeth to protect them whilst the lab technicians use the digital scan or impression sent by your dentist to make your new teeth.
Your final visit will be around one to two weeks later to fit the permanent restoration. Special requests for express manufacture can be made if you need the treatment to be completed sooner. Additional charges may apply.
