How Much Do Dental Implants Cost In The UK?

A single dental implant in the UK typically costs between £2,000 and £3,500 once all components are included. If you have been quoted anywhere between £995 and £3,500 for one tooth, you are not comparing like with like, because the dental implant cost you see advertised usually covers one part of a three-part treatment. That is why the figure can appear to move after the first appointment.

Below, we set out what you are actually paying for, why quotes differ so widely between clinics, and what to check before you commit.

Single Dental Implant Costs in the UK

A single dental implant costs between £2,000 and £3,500 in the UK when the fixture, the abutment, and the crown are all counted. At our Mayfair clinic, a straightforward single-tooth implant starts at around £3,540: the implant from £1,500, the abutment from £800, and the crown from £1,240.

The reason the headline figure surprises people is straightforward. Most advertised prices quote a single component, usually the titanium fixture on its own, because it is the lowest number available to publish. The abutment and crown are separate items fitted at later appointments, and without them, the fixture cannot be used.

What a written quote should list: The implant fixture, the abutment, the crown, any CBCT scan or diagnostic imaging, and the review appointments included after placement. If one of those five is missing from the paperwork, it has not yet been priced.

What a Dental Implant Price Includes

An implant is three separate components fitted at different stages of treatment, not a single item bought once.

The Implant Fixture

It is the titanium post placed into the jawbone, priced from £1,500. It replaces the root of the missing tooth and needs time to fuse with the bone, a process called osseointegration, before anything is attached to it. This is the component most often advertised on its own.

The Abutment

It is the connector that joins the fixture to the crown, from £800. It is tailored to your individual case and cannot be skipped or replaced with something cheaper.

The Crown

It is the visible part of the tooth, made in a dental laboratory and shade-matched to the surrounding teeth, priced at £1,240 to £1,950 depending on the material and where the tooth sits in the mouth. A molar carrying a heavy chewing load is specified differently from a front tooth chosen for appearance.

That totals £3,540 for an uncomplicated single-tooth case. Every figure above appears on our published treatment price list, so you can check it before you call us.

Additional Costs in Implant Treatment

Two categories of cost sit outside the implant itself, and whether they apply depends entirely on your mouth.

Assessment and Planning

A CBCT scan costs from £290 and produces a three-dimensional image of bone volume, nerve position, and sinus anatomy, which enables accurate placement planning. A new patient’s initial consultation starts from £160, and a routine examination is £95 to £170.

Preparatory Treatment

If the failing tooth is still in place, a tooth extraction costs £280 to £750. Active gum disease must be brought under control first, because implant failure is more commonly associated with mouths where periodontal disease is active and untreated; we provide specialist periodontal care in-house rather than referring cases at that stage elsewhere. When there is insufficient bone to securely hold a fixture, a bone graft may be needed before placement.

None of these is an automatic addition. They appear as itemised lines on a written treatment plan you see before treatment starts, which is also what General Dental Council standards require of any UK dental team.

Full Mouth Dental Implant Costs

Full mouth treatment does not mean one implant per missing tooth. Most approaches place four to six implants per jaw and fit an implant-retained bridge onto them, which is why arithmetic based on one fixture per tooth produces budgets that bear no relation to reality.

Across the UK private market, full-arch treatment generally ranges from £10,000 to £25,000 per jaw, depending on the number of implants placed, the bridge material, and whether any preparatory surgery is needed. That is a general market range, not our quoted price. Costs are worked out per jaw, so upper and lower treatments are priced separately.

There is no useful average here. The number only becomes real after a scan and clinical examination establishes how much bone you have and how many fixtures it can support. If you are planning a full-arch treatment, ask us for an itemised plan per jaw before you set a budget.

Why Dental Implant Prices Vary So Much

Five factors account for most of the spread between quotes:

  • What the quote includes. A £995 advertised implant is almost always just the fixture, with the abutment and crown billed separately.
  • The implant system used. Established manufacturers incur higher component costs, alongside long-term clinical data and the likelihood that matching parts will still be available if a crown needs replacing in fifteen years.
  • Who places the implant. Additional training in oral surgery and implantology is reflected in the fee. You can check any clinician’s registration on the GDC register.
  • Imaging and planning. CBCT scanning and guided implant surgery add cost at the planning stage, before any surgical appointment takes place.
  • Central London overheads sit above the national average, and lower overheads are part of why treatment abroad is advertised at lower prices. Aftercare, review appointments, and who handles any remedial work are the practical questions to ask in that case.

A lower quote is not automatically a poor one. Two quotes simply are not comparable until you know what each one contains.

Quick tip: Before accepting any implant quote, ask four questions. Which components are included in this figure? Which implant system are you using? How many review appointments are covered? What would a replacement crown cost later?

Weighing Up the Cost of Dental Implants

Implants replace both the root and the visible tooth, which is the clinical argument for their use. That helps maintain jawbone in a way dentures and bridges do not, and it avoids reshaping the healthy teeth on either side of the gap, which a conventional bridge requires.

Against that sit a higher upfront cost, a treatment timeline spread over several months as integration occurs, and the fact that implants are not suitable for everyone. Smoking, uncontrolled diabetes, and active gum disease all affect how reliably a fixture integrates with bone. Dentures and bridges remain entirely appropriate for many patients and cost considerably less at the outset.

Well-placed implants in a healthy, well-maintained mouth commonly last 15 to 20 years or more, with the crown usually the first component to need replacing. As the Association of Dental Implantology explains to patients, how long treatment lasts depends on maintenance and gum health rather than on a fixed lifespan. Budgeting over that horizon, including regular hygiene appointments, gives a fairer comparison than the sticker price alone.

Implants are only rarely available on the NHS, and only where there is a clear clinical need, as set out in NHS guidance. Where treatment is provided on the NHS, it falls under Band 3, and the current amount is published in the NHS dental charge bands.
